The 100

                                              By Kass Morgan

The 100 is a science fiction book by Kass Morgan i read it on the 28-29 of June

PARAGRAPH 1

The government on the spaceship “the Ark” sends a group of 100 convict teenagers down to earth to test whether it is livable after the nuclear war that took place 97 years earlier.  Here on the planet the 100 must find a way to survive in an unfamiliar environment with no experience, but little do they know they are not alone on the planet.

PARAGRAPH 2 I found Bellamy interesting because he was willing to sacrifice himself by forcing his way onto the landing ship just so that he could be with his sister Octavia. She was a prisoner on the ark, and her crime was being born. I found this interesting because on the ship they had limited space so they could not have more than 1 child, so because of this law they had to keep Octavia in hiding on ship while she was growing up.  Once on earth he continued to support his sister and friends, he also became a leader and ended up finding a way to hunt the local animal’s with no prior experience in this field.

PARAGRAPH 3 A message that I took from the text was that people will always find a way to survive. The 100 got stranded on earth with no previous experience in the outdoors and had no clue what to do, but they found a way to survive.  They learned how to build homes, scavenge and hunt for food, and make fire.  They also learned leadership skills and how to work together and cooperate.  I think that they would have found this difficult because having lived on the ship for their whole lives and having had everything provided for them would have made going to earth a lot harder.  Everything was strange and unfamiliar but they found a way to adapt.   I personally cannot relate to this because I have never been put in a situation where everything is different and new,  but I can only imagine how difficult it would have been for the 100.

PARAGRAPH 4 A massive challenge that the characters faced was adapting to a new environment and surviving in it.  An example of this is that they had to hunt for food and they previously had no experience scavenging and hunting for food.  I think that they would have found this difficult as they had all grown up on the spaceship and had everything provided for them. “Bellamy didn’t know why the ancient humans even bothered doing drugs. What was the point of shooting junk into your veins when walking through the forest had the same effect?”. This quote shows how they embraced their new world and thought that it was exciting and new. They didn’t try to just use their existing skills but developed new ones to help them survive.  I can relate to this challenge because when we went to Africa it was a totally different environment that we knew nothing about.  Before we went to Africa I took everything for granted, and just presumed that everything would be provided for me.  But when we went to Africa I learnt not to take things for granted and to always be thankful for what we have.

PARAGRAPH 5  I think that the title of the text is appropriate because  100 is an important figure in the book, but it doesn’t tell you what there is 100 of so it leaves you wanting to read the book to see what there is 100 of.

PARAGRAPH 6 I would recommend this book to ages 14-15+ because there are scene where people get floated out into space, there are also sex scences and sexual references so i do not think that this would be appropriate to younger people as they woud not understand some of the content.
